For the word of the day I was thinking about E Pluribus Unum. The entry in the dictionary is so short though so I decided on a different one. This phrase is the motto of the United States. The origin is Latin and it means: One out of the many. It used to be on the back of the dollar bill then in the 50’s the supreme court switched it out for ‘In God We Trust’ (but I think I have still seen some money with that on the back). According to the Dictionary of Word and Phrase Origins, (Morris 1962) E Pluribus Unum refers to the “Banding together of the independent colonies into the Union.”
I thought of periodic table because I read the E Pluribus Unum is or was on the periodic table.
the periodic table is: An arrangement of the chemical elements according to their atomic numbers, to exhibit the periodic law.
I remember the in chemistry class in high school and one in college we had to try to memorize the table or at least know what the elements stood for. We had to write equations with co-efficient numbers, and atomic numbers etc. along with all of the elements and then solve them. I really enjoyed that. It was kind of like algebra. The teacher was kind of…. interesting. He was a teacher never went shopping because that was a normal activity. He lived in the classroom and that is it. He never attended sporting events or ate yogurt. I wonder if he is still alive. He will always be the age that he was in class. that was many years ago.
this definition was taken from Webster’s New World Dictionary.
Did anyone look? I just happened to have a dollar bill and it’s on the ribbon above the Eagle!
