The missing penny by Margaret Leora Workman; Warponie Art

So since I have started working at a gas station, the issue of having the penny discontinued is sort of a conundrum. People seem to understand on the surface that they may get extra change or not enough and I have no idea really what to do. I was told to round up or round down depending on what the total is that I am supposed to give back to the customer. Some people don’t want their change and so they just let me have it, so I keep it in my drawer in case I come up short somewhere else because of the issue of the penny being discontinued. It’s like none of the loose ends have been sewn up. It’s just that the situation is that the penny is gone, but nothing else has changed to multiples of five! Prices have not reflected that the penny is gone! Customers are supposed to receive a penny or two back from me for change, but I just say I’m sorry I don’t have any pennies. They look at me in sort of a sorrowful way to say that they understand, but I don’t know what to say and it’s just a penny, but I think that these people really want that penny or the two pennies so I’ve been giving them nickels instead! And then sometimes they say no I don’t need that, but I don’t want to keep explaining that I can’t give them their correct change back so I just give them a nickel instead of three pennies or two pennies. I have worked as a bank teller before and usually it’s required that we had to have our drawers perfectly balanced but in this situation, my drawer will never be in perfect balance.!!! I really think that this idea of getting rid of pennies was the worst idea…
