My new project by Margaret Leora Workman; Warponie Art

I am going to put a door here! I needed more air in my space so I just have to put up the frame and a narrower door or maybe I will use this one. But this is a screen door so I have to come up with a regular door. This goes out to my still pretend sunroom. Why not?! I could not get the supplies that I needed for the roof so…this room does not have a roof. So I am not needing a door right now. But I do have to repair the whole wall which has deteriorated. Oh well, I have a door that is close by already! This door is an extra serene door that I have. It looks great but is too wide.

Update: I am not doing that yet because I have decided to put a window there and I have to repair the whole wall. I put up 2 sheets of sheet metal there so it’s fine for now. I really need to get a different project done. I had taken the wall down that lined my porch because it needed to be repaired. I found that the paint was peeling in that bedroom. This was a little more than 4 years ago. When I was married we had went to the city and got permission to take down the wall and repair it and then put it back up. So now I am just getting to that because now I am not married, so now I can do it my way. They said that I had 5 years to do that so it became a back porch. I put up the studs then and I doubled them so that they look like posts for a porch. It separated the mother-in-law apartment that is next to the house even more. So now it’s year 4 and I have to do it. I have started putting up the plywood. I had plywood from an old deck that I removed in sheets. It’s really old but still use-able. I just have to paint them with kilz which I added water to and rolled it on. I saw that there are some videos on YouTube that have people explain how to roll paint onto plywood. I haven’t watched them yet so I hope that I did it correctly. Oh well too late. The double studs are around 4 feet apart so I read that a person can use a king stud in between wall studs when putting in windows or doors. And then a jack stud is nailed to that. I have to put windows in anyway so that’s really convenient. Then the cripple studs go under the windows and some other random boards where ever else! I already built a wall that encloses part of a porch in a different area and that is where I have one of my glass doors. It is technically inside, and then there is a glass door that goes to the outside. So here is the wall that I have started to replace. I read that I could use plywood on the inside as well instead of drywall. So I think I might do that because of all of the drywall dust being so tortuous on my lungs. There are so many different designs that you can do as well when painting the plywood. I have seen shiplap being used in the past but it’s somewhat expensive and not really available out here! Maybe a person could cut the plywood into strips and then put it up. It’s not as thick as shiplap I think but i could call it a mock ship lap. Some of my plywood is sort of deteriorating so I might have to cut those parts off anyway. So after I get the plywood up on the outside I will put sheet metal on top of that then I will put on the roofing panels that are wavy or corrugated and made of sheet metal. I really hope that the hardware store still has some left! They will go in between the windows that I have to install.

For plywood you don’t really have to worry about paint peeling because it’s just wood. Adding water to kills is fine because it is so thick and I am painting the plywood because it’s old, and for extra water proofing. You don’t have to paint it because whatever you are going to use for siding will go over that. So it isn’t needed. But a few of my plywood pieces had some mold on them for whatever reason. Kills primer covers over mold. It’s not an exact science in adding water and you can’t mess it up!

I have painted wood paneling successfully before. That isn’t plywood. Wood paneling is slick and shiny. Wood paneling is usually brown and is used in mobile homes. People never paint these, and I don’t know why?? I used an oils base primer and rolled it on. Not water based. You could use a brush and that might be better. When I rolled it on little paint splatters went everywhere because it’s oil based. So use a tarp and tape it to the bottom trim so it doesn’t move. It took two coats of that. You could use regular paint after that as well but I did not. I lacked the time. Since it was oil based it had a smooth sheen. The water based primers are usually a matte finish. If you do not use a primer on wood paneling it will peel because it’s so shiny. Some people might sand it first but I don’t like sanding so I used the primer. It’s really caustic so wear a mask and open all of the windows so that the fumes don’t seep into your lungs. but now that I think about it I might have painted it after! I think that I used just latex paint which is water based. Since I had the primer on there it won’t peel. I remember that I wanted to do that test of using an oil based primer with using latex paint over that and it worked. Just get the latex paint that isn’t a matte finish which is hard to clean! There are other sheens of paint that have different grades of being shiny. Have you ever painted a wall and then did touch ups with the same color but you couldn’t remember what sheen it was when you had to buy more? Then after you paint all of those nail holes then you can see all of the touch ups being more shiny than the rest. It’s just a different sheen. Just keep the curtains drawn and it won’t bother you or put furniture there to cover it.
