A few things by Margaret Leora Workman; Warponie Art

My grand parents are/ were Amish. I lived with them for long periods of time in Amish communities. The Amish usually only referred to my grandparents or spoke to them since I was just a kid but they were referred to as the ‘traveling Amish people’ in a personage. I was usually with them if I wasn’t in town. They were extremely strict and always stated that only can you be Amish when you are on a farm and a community member along with other Amish community members. My grandfather and I would help out with the circus and rodeos and I was usually, always a clown. No one ever recognized me! We were also Mormon. They were always renting out rooms from their house and I helped them. They were always telling me, “let’s not announce….. things to people. Keep to yourself, do your work, and you will find success, within yourself. Do not look to other people for that or for any help for that matter. Do it yourself or don’t do it at all.” Both of my grandparents were like that. “AND keep all of your T’s dotted and your I’s slashed!!” Yes grandmother! …my grandfather would just look at her and laugh…. Did I mention that I had to salute them? Yes. I would say, “well you are my elder…” And my grandmother would yell at grandfather and say many things about this situation of my unenjoyment of that. Then came the day when she stopped requiring it of me and it was the worst day of my entire life…
