In 2022 I got a loan through the Sallie Mae smart option loan. They only allow the certain school that you applied to, to be on the loan. I applied to SNHU online for computer software something or other. The financial aid department at the school called me and said that I could only use like around 3000$ Of that loan that was approved for 16,000$. I asked her why and she said it was that she was protecting me from borrowing too much. I had also applied to get a loan through FAFSA just in case, that one was like 4500$ through the FAFSA loan department. They would only allow me to use a couple thousand for that as well. This was not enough for the tuition such as books. She almost seemed to be happy to be telling me this, like she was gloating and she was accomplishing her bucket wish list by telling me this news. Sallie Mae had approved 15,960 for school BUT because the school only approved the 3000$ sallie Mae changed the approval and said that I could only have that much, but it wasn’t enough for tuition. After that happened Sallie Mae also told me that I would now need a co-signer for a new loan if it needed to be a different school. So this school said no to me and this loan, so that I couldn’t go there, so then I now needed a co-signer to go to a different school and I would have to apply all over again as they do not transfer these loans to different schools. I was told that again today. This is now almost three years later. I received an offer from Sallie Mae in the mail saying that I could apply. I called and explained to him about what had happened again. So it was an approved loan back then in 2022 and he acted like it was just an outdated application. Rude as can be about letting me apply again. My credit score then was a 650 and now it’s a 720. Why would these people be this way? Again he said that I would have to have a co-signer. Why??? I will get that letter, you know, saying why and he couldn’t tell me. Soooo, do not get this loan, the rep said that the loan is also only per semester or something and not for the whole year even though it says on the app that is for a year. I would like to transfer to a university but I cannot get approved for school loans from FAFSA. I might have explained this but FAFSA said that it’s up to the school to approve a FAFSA loan for a student. I talked to FAFSA 2-3 times and that is what they told me. The school can be nice or not nice and give different students however much they want each student to have. My income was extremely low so this is how I know this. I qualified for it but the school would not approve it. This is different than how it was 20 years ago, it was the opposite. So now students are at the mercy of the colleges.
