The Flight of The Grasshopper by Margaret Leora Workman; Warponie Art

I wrote this poem one day while I was thinking of my garden again and wondering about grasshoppers and bugs in general and what they might think about us.

The Flight of The Grasshopper
by Margaret Leora Workman

Are you available to give me a tomato?
I hope that you will not say ‘no’.
You may think that I am low
while you are high in your loft,
so soft.

I am not as slight as you might think;
Do not wink
with your eye of deceit.
There is no rest for that kind of false play
and anyway…

Are you available to give me a strawberry?
I will gladly except it with glee.
Please, I would love it if you would save one for me.
Don’t be matronly.

This is my plea;
if we go further on with this conversation,
this is my consternation,
this situation of complete hesitation
and your un-harbored irritation.
This land needs some irrigation,
don’t you think?

and I see you are unable to discern
because you are still high in your loft, so soft.
Have you forgotten?!
That I am not rotten!?!
And I deserve your love with this tomato,
Oh!
And your acceptance with this strawberry!

I flew up to you in your loft, so soft
and took what you so verily
did not want to give.
I took you by surprise?!
and revoked your prize?!
that you thought you had hard-earned won,
and now it’s done.
Your day of demise is here
and we are all screaming a cheer
of death and decay to you who bray
while you present your winnings,
but, lo, this is your last inning…
