Counting back change by Margaret Leora Workman; Warponie Art

Have you ever had to count change back to a customer by counting up to the next dollar? I guess people use calculators now…how easy! I remember in highschool I worked at McDonalds and I was usually in the first drive-thru window getting the money and the next window was for the food to go out to the customer. I had to make happy meal boxes while I waited for customers. I remember ringing peoples orders in up front while I was in drive through at the same time because they had no one there cuz they decided to go on break and laugh at me, taunting me… we had to use the same register for both! It was nightmarish. Then I started to work during the day while the other high schoolers came in for lunch. Because I was able to graduate early from high school, I started working full time. I became an adult while they were still coming in for lunch! I had already worked a couple of other jobs but when you leave high school and everyone else is still there it can be really life changing! AND THEN…they made me go out to the lobby during lunch and serve coffee!! Yes they really did that back then. And, again, it was nightmarish because I had gone to class with some of these people! And then I was at McDonalds asking them if they wanted coffee. I wasn’t sure if kids drank coffee, right? I tried to get out of it by telling the managers that they weren’t really adults so they shouldn’t have coffee and didn’t it stunt their growth?? The manager said that’s what happened to me I guess since I was too scared to serve them coffee and then she taunted me again. I had to be there at like 4 am to serve the elderly pancakes and breakfast! I mean they seemed elderly…It was so horrid…Anyway that is where I learned how to count up to a dollar. Back to the first drive-thru window. I had to pretend to know what the customer was going to give me and type that into the register, then have the change ready for them so that it was completely fast! This was the McDonald’s in Cheyenne Wyoming and we were so busy at all times. The manager taught me how to do it! And I really was happy to gain that skill! I still remember her, I think her name was Terry. If the customer had a different amount I had to reconfigure what the change would be and I couldn’t use a calculator. After learning it, it was extremely easy to do. I have thought about her over the years and I wonder where she is now!
